Accident Unit
Accident units can be specified and built in many different formats. Those originally built on 10 to 14 tonne chassis with 10 TM cranes seem to have long disappeared and the new breed of accident units are currently being built on larger chassis with bigger cranes, with the occasional unit ordered on a 15 ton truck with a 12 to 14 TM crane. More common is the 4x2 chassis at 18,000 kgs GVW with a 16 TM crane with 3 to 4 extensions. This is now perceived as being the entry point of the accident unit market with many units now being built on 3 axle chassis of 23 to 26,000 kg GVW with 9 ton front axles and cranes from 20 to 25 TM with 3, 4 and 5 hydraulic extensions.
2009 has seen some of the biggest accident units ever built here at Droitwich, utilising chassis with large front axles, with cranes of up to 40 TM being installed. These predominately come with 4-5 extensions, radio remote controls and extra rear stabilisers to give a stable platform to achieve the best lifting capacity from the larger cranes, which takes us into a new era with platforms being able to carry 1, 2 or 3 casualties. The crane units come with 12 mtrs of reach which allows them to attend major incidents and lift 3 damaged vehicles from the carriageway without manoeuvring during the rescue operation.
These modern accident units are being built with a wide variation of cranes and specifications and are predominately built in conjunction with the hydraclamp damage free lifting equipment, available with a wide range of platforms from 6 to 15,000 kgs capacity. Platform lengths can be manufactured to suit your individual requirements taking into consideration your chassis choice, wheelbase, axle configuration and your individual choice of day, sleeper or crew cab. Your accident unit can be specified with a wide range of optional extras and equipment including front winch, side skirting, side and rear winching systems, hydraulic flyers, power generators, safety lighting, powered scene lighting. You can also specify the option of second vehicle platforms with a choice of 6 second vehicle lifts giving you the option to choose wheel grids or lifting forks dependant on the size of your chassis and your operational requirements. The accident unit comes as standard with manual controls to the crane, slidebed and second vehicle lift but all of these can be ordered with optional radio remotes, all hydraulic functions can be included in standard push button remotes where more precise control can be achieved via a joy-stick proportional remote control system.
Here at Dyson’s you can specify your accident unit to include the chassis, crane and recovery system where we will include your individual requirements during the manufacturing process supplying you a complete unit ready to work including your sign writing and graphics.
